NEWS! Dou-la-la: Future IBCLC

Just got word yesterday that I've been accepted into Birthingway's brand-spanking-new lactation program, a 2 year degree that includes enough credits and clinical hours to be eligible to sit for the daunting IBCLE (the certifying exam for all IBCLCs).

ZOMG.

I am so excited, and nervous, and a little worried about balancing it with my new life, but mostly? STOKED. I still plan on eventually pursuing midwifery, likely through the same school, but in order to meet my daughter's needs, I think that this will be better suited to our lives once she is older. I'm thinking that won't be for at least 5 years, bare minimum. Probably more like 10. And in the meantime, I'll be able to work in a field I'm equally passionate about - doing doula work along the way!

Wish me luck! And lots of financial aid . . .

  3. That's great! Is that a distance program or on campus? I've been looking for a distance learning program that fulfills the IBCLE requirements.

  5. Congrats, I'm the friend who's in the Lactation Program with you! It's great to know someone else who's in the program. Last I talked with them I couldn't even get them to give me an idea of how many students were accepted into the program.

  6. Congrats! I've been trying to get into that program myself but last I talked to them about it they didn't even know when the program would be up. I already live in Portland and plan to go to Birthingway for their midwifery program after I get my Associates for Early Childhood Education at PCC. I must hear all about it!

  7. LISA! How excellent! Study buddy? I'll be going part/half-time for the 1st term or 2, so I'll likely just be doing AP and BF1. I'll email you back soon (and thanks for that)!

Jennifer, we'll have to have some Stumptown together sometime!

  8. (From further upthread) Rebecca, I seriously thought of you! :O) Cheers!

And Jennifer Rose Cox, we should definitely make a point of bumping into each other! And let me know who your friend is!

Oh, all the connections, it makes one dizzy with the awesome.

  9. I would suggest taking BF1, BF2 and A&P because BF1 is for the first few weeks of the quarter and BF2 is for the last few weeks of the quarter, never overlapping. It's like taking one class all quarter and that way you can start in on BF3 in the fall with the other ALC students. (there are 8 of us now I guess!)
And if you're concerned with financial aid I would suggest trying to find a way to take 9 credits to be able to get minimum 3/4 time. You'll get the most funds for your credits taking either 9 or 12 credits.
